I tried to make the ornament today, and I’m having the hardest time. I’m using satin ribbon, and it is fraying like crazy. If I cut close to the pins, it will fray and sometimes slip out from under the pin. I took everything off the foam to start again, but I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent this issue? I have pinking shears, but they are big (aren’t they all?). I can switch to a different kind of ribbon, but I think the satin looks nicer than the grosgrain would. I appreciate anything you can suggest.
Thanks, Tammy.
Hi Tammy, I’m so sorry you’re having some trouble with your ribbon fraying! I have a couple of ideas that might help!
One option would be to pre-measure the pieces you need (so you’re not having to trim while pinning) and then use a lighter to quickly melt and seal the ends of your ribbon. That will stop the fraying. If you’d prefer to continue to trim on the foam, you could also try using something like fray-check. I have not tried this on satin ribbon, but it is a product that is designed to stop fraying on raw edges of fabric. That might help! I hope these tips work for you!
Thank you! I precut my ribbon pieces, but they are all the same length. Maybe if I place the ribbon so that I only have to trim at the equator, it will work.
I bought everything to make the ornament, but I want to cut my ribbon ahead of time and create a kit I can take along with me. How long do I need to cut each piece of ribbon?
Thanks!
And about how many pieces of each color of ribbon?
Hi Tammy,
The longest piece you would need is 2.5″ if you are using one of The Ornament Girls Soft Foam Stars. The number you would need is going to be based on the width of the ribbon you use. I would suggest cutting many pieces at that 2.5″ length and then cutting them to size as you go if you don’t want to bring a whole roll of ribbon along with you. This is going to make sure that you have enough ribbon to cover each section of the start, no matter were you are starting. I hope that helps!
Thank you, Sarah! I am using the recommended 3/8″ ribbon.
Hi Tammy, I hope those tips help you get yours cut to get started!
